Ministries at the Church of the Advent
We have a growing education program. On Sunday mornings, we have a class for preschool children, for school-age children which meets during the 10am Mass from mid-September through May.
South Baltimore Station
The Church of the Advent provides meal services for the men who live at South Station here in Federal Hill. This is an opportunity to put into action the belief of the members of our community of faith that we are Christ’s hands and feet in the world.
On the fourth Monday of every month, a group of people from the church gets together to prepare and serve food to those living at the facility right here in the neighborhood. This is a vital ministry of the church. You can participate by shopping for groceries, preparing food (in advance or on our day of service), serving dinner, or donating to support the South Station food bank. Should you want to help, please contact Mary Fleming or Jon Meyer, the coordinators of the South Station Volunteers, for more information.
Elementary School Outreach
As part of our Outreach Program at the Advent, we have adopted 3-4 families from a local elementary school for the past few years and provided Christmas gifts and dinner in addition to Easter baskets and Easter dinner.
A contact at the school provides us with a list of the family members, their ages, sizes, and a wish list for Christmas gifts. Members of the Advent participate by contributing money, food items, or items from a wish list. Members also help by purchasing whatever items are still needed with the funds collected and wrapping gifts. Volunteers deliver the food and gifts a few days prior to Christmas.
The process is similar for Easter in that we collect money or food items. Members purchase food and items to make Easter baskets in addition to assembling the Easter baskets. Volunteers deliver the food and baskets a day or two prior to Easter.
For each holiday we have typically provided a ham, side dishes, vegetables, dessert, and something for breakfast.
For the Christmas gifts we have tried to have at least two toys for each child in addition to a new coat, hat, gloves, shoes, and pajamas.
The Altar Guild, the Acolytes Guild, and Choir ensure that the worship at the Church of the Advent is orderly and beautiful, a fit offering of our praise to God.
The Church of the Advent has a cell of the Society of Our Lady of Walsingham, and is working to establish a ward of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. Please see Fr. Kroh if you would like more information about either of these organizations.
